British Studies Centre

The British Studies Centre at SEIS, BFSU was established in 1989 under the auspices of the Ministry of Education of China with sponsorship of the British Council. In 2011, the British Studies Centre was approved as one of the national bases for country and area studies funded by the Chinese Ministry of Education. As a multi-disciplinary academic platform for British studies in China, it has been further advancing its endeavours to build new type of think tank, and was listed in the Chinese Think Tank Index (CTTI) in 2018.

The primary objective of the centre is to cultivate talents and conduct research to serve China’s foreign policy strategy, economic and social development, and cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world. It aims to serve as an interdisciplinary research institute focusing on British politics, foreign relations, and language & cultural studies, while covering the studies of British history, economy, and society. Its research has also expanded into other research fields such as European integration as well as the Commonwealth and the UK’s former colonies.

To date, over 200 MA graduates and more than 20 PhD students have been enrolled in the Centre for European and British Studies, making important contributions to the development of British Studies in China. The Centre offers approximately 20 postgraduate courses. It has hosted a number of academic conferences, including the “Sino-British Relations Forum,” “The UK’s Global Role in the Post-Brexit Era,” “The UK’s Political, Economic, and Social Landscape amid Multiple Risks and Challenges,” and “British Studies from the Perspective of Country and Area Studies,” In 2013, the Centre launched the publication of Development Report Series of the United Kingdom.
