The Department of Translation & Interpreting

Established in 2007 as one of China’s pioneering academic units in its field, the Department of Translation & Interpreting has distinguished itself through exceptional service to the nation and scholarly leadership. Our faculty have been entrusted with critical assignments for national leaders and have played instrumental roles in high-profile international initiatives, including the translation of key documents for Beijing’s successful 2008 Olympic bid. Today, the department is at the forefront of the discipline, generating influential scholarship in areas such as Chinese cultural translation, socio-translation studies, translation ethics, and the rapidly evolving field of AI-assisted translation.

Our undergraduate program is meticulously designed to cultivate the next generation of elite translators and interpreters capable of operating at the highest levels of global engagement. The flagship four-year Bachelor of Arts program, with a specialization in Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs, was created to prepare experts for critical roles in international dialogue and cross-cultural communication.

The curriculum follows a carefully orchestrated progression, beginning with the establishment of robust bilingual proficiency and broad interdisciplinary knowledge. Students engage with courses in international relations, global governance, intercultural communication, and comparative politics. From the second year onward, the focus shifts to intensive, hands-on training, incorporating emerging technologies and tools. A hallmark of our program is its emphasis on technological fluency, with specialized courses in AI Translation, Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT), Machine Translation Post-Editing, and Digital Humanities in Translation, preparing students for the evolving demands of the profession.
